Start Children Growing Early: Part I

Seeds

What is a seed?  In toddler terms it is a really small thing that grows into something bigger.  And, if it is properly nurtured, will produce a flower and fruit.  This is a concept that even the avid gardener finds a true miracle!  The first step to getting your children interested is talking about plants and then talking about the food on their plate.  "Did you know we are going to grow tomatoes like those?"  You can just see the little grin...

Take a walk through your yard, bringing their attention to whatever could spark their interest.  Then, the fun part...let them play in the dirt!  Yes, even my little girl is covered in it sometimes:)  Once they see that you are letting them be a part of this, they will look forward to it.

So, a small challenge for the coming weekend.  Play in the dirt!  Explain that the dirt is where the plants will get their nutrients.  If your child is already dirt-friendly, purchase cucumber seeds.  They are inexpensive and sprout quickly.  They are relatively hardy and require less watering to start their growth.  Pick your garden area to be full-sun and let the cucumber have plenty of room to vine.  I have planted cucumber seeds right into the ground many times, with no problems.  Make sure you let the little one hold the seeds and drop them into the shallow pits you have dug.

This weekend:

-Pick up a child shovel and pail; pick up a pack of cucumber seeds.
-Pick an area in your yard that you can plant.
-Till or remove the sod (can be a sweaty process).  You can purchase compost for your garden spot to mix with the dirt already there.  With only cucumbers, this is not necessary though. Make the area full-sun and as small or large as you would like.  Remember, the vines of cucumbers will grow very long, but you can prune them as you wish.
-Plant your seeds.  Water well.

We will meet up next week to encourage the next steps of your garden!

Music Friday!

For my friend who is walking in the valley.  The mountaintop is near!  Listen loud girl!
